I am tired of being expected to apologize or pay someone because I am a middle aged, white male. I didn't fight in the Crusades, start any wars, have any slaves, put natives on reserves and residential schools or imprison Japanese or Chinese. I just grew up on a small farm and raised my family the best way I could. So don't ask me for payments or apologies.

Government is always saying there is now place for them to cut costs. Well I know one place where thay could save millions and that is what they spend on advertising. Why is important that government advertise so much? Do they have competion? Will they sell more stuff? I think they actually do it to keep the media quiet. Stir up too much dirt and we will cut off your advertising. In the recent imposition of a fee schedule on the Alberta doctors, Fred Horne said he had no choice but to impose that schedule on the doctors but we know he had decided to do that weeks ahead of the announcement as they had a complete adverising program ready to go. We all know how long it would take civil servants to put together that amount of advertising. It wouldn’t have been done overnight. I still say that once government got into the gambling business, they started acting like mafia and not government. Government has always been inefficient, but they used to be fairly honest. Now you can’t believe anything that comes from them. Just sleeze and lies.

I believe the City of Edmonton is absolutely out of control as far as spending is concerned. A developer can build a very nice house with land and services for $750,000. The city of Edmonton built basically an empty warehouse with washrooms, on land it already owns, and it cost $3,900,000. I am not questioning the need for a warm up facility at the trail head of Whitemud trail, but I sure am questioning why it should cost 3.9 million dollars when a comparable facility could have been built by the private sector for well under 1 million dollars. Where does all the money go? Why do we let this waste continue? No wonder the city and province are always crying poverty.

During his administration he has brought in draconian laws concerning everyday living such as smoking, idling engines etc. etc., spent excessive money on stupid causes like races and new arenas but doesn’t believe the police should get involved if there is a problem with excessive speed.
I wonder if the city of Edmonton will be bankrupt after they finish developing the airport lands. They are starting out in a place where before a shovel goes in the ground they have to destroy buildings, dig up thousands of square meters of reinforced concrete, likely deal with fuel contaminated ground, pay to move businesses and fight lawsuits. They will lose all the tax money that Edmonton gets from airport business and will also have to close the air museum. If that isn’t enough problems the neighbourhoods will be designed and developed by civil servants and not real developers and home builders who know what the public wants to buy. I can see a bunch of over priced “green” inspired homes languishing on the market that seemed like a great idea to the civil servants that dreamed them up but that no one wants to buy. So they will rent them out to every drunk and druggie who needs a home. Instant slum. Slowly bankrupt. No wonder Edmonton is continously falling behind Calgary in every way.

The real cure for youth obesity is included in one sentence. “Go out and play”. Not organized play, just running, jumping, climbing, building forts, everything a childs imagination can lead them to. The chance of kids being abducted is so slight it isn’t something to be worried about, but raising kids with no confidence or independence is someting to worry about. Playing outside with friends is a real help to develope confidence and social skills as well as being good exercize.
